Is Yoga For Kids A Good Idea?

As a way to promote health and fitness, some schools now offer yoga for kids. While yoga, of course, has been around for hundreds of years, for many it’s a “new” form of exercise that excites some parents and children, who believe yoga offers an excellent opportunity to stay healthy, especially when we’re always hearing about the growing number of overweight children in our midst.

Other parents, however, don’t embrace this type of program. They may think it’s not the best way to promote fitness and may even question the practice due to its more spiritual background, worrying that such programs are more about religion than health. Schools must weigh both sides of the issue, and both sides have won in certain cases. But, even if yoga isn’t an option at your children’s school, you may want to consider pursuing it at home or in community programs. Why? It works.

It’s an age-old adage that children should be outside playing, running around and acting their age. Unfortunately, in today’s electronics-based society, many don’t embrace these traditional rites of childhood. Instead, we find our children online, sitting in front of the TV or with a video game control in their hands. Outdoor activities have lost their appeal.

That means parents sometimes need to look to slightly less conventional methods to ensure their kids are active and healthy. When you attend yoga for kids classes, you get multiple benefits. The most obvious is that you help build your child's natural flexibility and stamina; this can help with other exercise programs and keep kids lean and agile. Another benefit of yoga for kids is encouraging them to get out and be part of a class. This lessens their dependence on the computer and the television, while helping the kids learn effective interpersonal skills in a group setting. Instead, kids can learn the importance of exercise and receive the full advantages of it through a program that’s not too difficult. Some programs will offer the opportunity for parents and children to participate together, allowing you share and new and relaxing activity into your family.

With yoga for kids, they can see just how far their bodies can move and contortion is always an interesting way to impress their friends. They may find it more entertaining and, simultaneously, more calming than other forms of exercise. It is different and they can appreciate the difference. The right program won’t be too hard or boring – two reasons that some children shy away from other forms of exercise.

The health benefits of yoga for kids are obvious and quickly seen. Kids will learn about focus and energy, two skills that will serve them well as they grow into their adult lives. And they’ll also learn the vital skill of relaxation, another life-long benefit that can reduce stress and all the diseases that come with it.

So if you’re looking for a new way for your child to exercise and develop, consider yoga for kids.
